Washing Sofa Covers and Soft Furnishings

Sofas are used every day in our homes, and they can often be at risk from everyday stains like chocolate, curry stains, or tea spills! Fortunately, most sofa covers and home furnishings can be easily cleaned. Read on for some of our top tips for cleaning sofa covers at home.

How to Clean a Fabric Sofa

Before you start to clean your fabric sofa, it’s a good idea to remove all the cushions and pillows and remove any debris or items that have fallen under the cushions. You can use your vacuum cleaner to remove any dirt or crumbs from the sofa – make sure to use the right attachment for your vacuum cleaner, and read the manual of your vacuum cleaner for more information and guidance.

How to Wash Sofa Cushion Covers

Now, it’s time to deal with the sofa cushion covers! Are the covers removable? Often, you’ll find a zipper or buttons on the back of the sofa cushions. Most removable covers can easily be washed in the washing machine! However, before you put them in the washing machine, check the care label first. If it states that the item is washable, then use a detergent without a bleaching or brightening agent, such as Surf excel, to help keep the fabric in the best possible condition.

Remember to wash matching items the same number of times so one doesn’t fade faster than the other, and don’t dry in direct sunlight to avoid fading of colours. If the item doesn’t have a care label, ask your dry cleaner for advice. For covers that you can’t easily remove, try using baby wipes on obvious stains, or gently wipe your fabric sofa with a small amount of soapy water. Remember not to get the sofa or the cushions too wet – use only a small amount of water.

How to Wash Sofa Coverings with Trimmings

Trimmings on items can affect how they are washed or which product you should use. For example, if a sofa cover has leather trimmings, the care label may say “Dry Clean Only” even if the rest of the cover is washable. If this is the case, always follow the directions on the care label.
