The weekend has come, and the mommy in me decided to do something creative with my kids! My daughter told me that she has to write something about her weekend activities (based on the idea of Samuel Pepys’ diary), and so we decided to bake biscuits. This would be a wonderful thing to write about!
Baking with kids will entertain them and also help them to learn some new skills. It also would inculcate an idea in your kid’s mind – that helping mom in the kitchen by doing little jobs is a part of growing up! Also, don’t forget how good it will make them feel – they can brag to their dear dad about their biscuit experience and get to say, ‘Know what? I made it myself!’
To start with, we chose a simple recipe. These eggless Winnie the Pooh biscuits will be easy for kids to make as new learners. As with every other kitchen work, it is good to start by washing our hands and drying them thoroughly with kitchen paper or a soft cloth.
Eggless Biscuits Recipe
Making Dough: 30 mins | Shaping the Biscuits: 10-20 mins | Cooking Time: 10 min
Preparing the Dough
- Self-raising flour - 150 grams
- Caster or granulated sugar - 50 gram
- Butter - 100 gram
- Milk - 2 to 3 tsp
- Pinch of salt
- Using a mixing spoon or wooden spoon, blend the butter, sugar and milk in a bowl until they transform into a light, fluffy mass.
- Now add self-raising flour with a pinch of salt to the above mixture.
- If you don't have self-raising flour, you can use ordinary flour with a pinch of baking powder.
- Allow the dough to set for an hour or so in the fridge.
- If you want, you can also use a blender to make the dough if you like.
How to Make the Biscuits
- A Bowl (to hold the dough balls)
- Roller (Chapati Roller)
- Cake Embellishments (available in shops)
- Kitchen Foil
- Baking Tray
- Oven (of course!), preheated to 150 C / gas mark 6
- Make little dough balls, and let your kids take one at a time and roll it out onto a board or clean surface.
- Roll the dough using a cake or Chapati roller. Use a little flour on the surface now and then so that the dough rolls out easy and flat.
- Using the Winnie the Pooh cutters, press the flat dough so that the shape remains intact. Remove the excess from the sides – you can re-roll them to make another one or two biscuits at the end.
- After all the shapes are cut out, place four to five biscuits onto the foiled baking tray slightly apart from each other and ask the kids to decorate them using cake embellishments.
- Once the final decorations are done, put the tray into the oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until the edges turn lightly brown.
- After the biscuits are cooked, remove them from the tray immediately and place them onto a wire rack or on the kitchen foil itself to cool.
Helpful Hints when Baking Biscuits
Always preheat the oven to the right temperature to bake (150 C / Gas mark 6). For better tasting biscuits, you can add an egg while preparing the dough. Also, you can make different varieties of biscuits by adding vanilla extract, chocolate bits, honey, and ginger to the dough.
