Being a mom sometimes feels like a tough task. The constant worry, the juggling of home and work tasks, having to carefully make hundreds of choices that affect your children’s welfare – motherhood is certainly not always easy! But once a year, on Mother’s Day, moms get to be a little less hard on themselves, and get to see how they look through their families’ eyes – as caring, kind, and supportive mothers, wives, and daughters.
Mother’s Day is about celebrating the joyful and rewarding aspects of motherhood – it’s a day to honour and pay special attention to the mothers in our lives. And what better way to express how we feel than to accompany our gifts with a card sharing a mother’s day quote or poem?
So if you’re looking for something thoughtful to include in your cards this year, or for something to fire your own little ones’ imaginations, check out our favourite Mother’s Day quotes and poems below. If you’re yet to find a card, you can find our tutorial on how to make handmade cards here (don’t worry – we’ve also got all the tips on glue and paint removal here too!) before reading on.

Mother’s Day Quotes
There are plenty of great quotes for Mother’s Day! Here are some of our favourites, perfect for including in a card or special message for Mom:
Mothers hold their child’s hand for a moment, and their heart for a lifetime.
The love between a mother and a child is forever.
A mother’s love is patient and forgiving.
Home is where your Mom is.
A mother’s work is paid with hugs and kisses.
Mom, you are special to me every single day!
Some of the best quotes for mother’s day come from famous people in history. One such individual, well known for her own maternal qualities, was India’s own Mother Teresa. Here are some of the encouraging things she said about love and family:
“Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do… But how much love we put in that action.”
“If you want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.”
Many international literary and historical figures have famously extolled the virtues of mothers – often humorously. Here some examples of quirky observations you might also have made about the mothers in your lives:
“A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” Tenneva Jordan, author.
“No matter how old a mother is, she watches her middle-aged children for signs of improvement.” Florida Scott-Maxwell, writer and playwright.

Here are a couple of classic examples of poems you might want to read out to your mother, or include in a letter or card: M-O-T-H-E-R by Howard Johnson
"M" is for the million things she gave me, "O" means only that she's growing old, "T" is for the tears she shed to save me, "H" is for her heart of purest gold; "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining, "R" means right, and right she'll always be, Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the world to me
Wonderful Mother by Pat O’Reilly
God made a wonderful mother, A mother who never grows old; He made her smile of the sunshine, And He moulded her heart of pure gold; In her eyes He placed bright shining stars, In her cheeks fair roses you see; God made a wonderful mother, And He gave that dear mother to me.
Sometimes famous poems on mothers don’t carry the exact sentiment you’re looking to express. If you feel a bit odd about using someone else’s words to express your own feelings, why not write a poem on mother’s day yourself? In fact, penning a mother’s day poem isn’t as hard as you’d think. Startby writing down a list of all the things you want to say to your mom. How does she help you? What are her best qualities? Do you have a funny incident that you can use as inspiration?
Now try to put your ideas together in a poem. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t rhyme, or if you think it sounds clumsy – when it comes to letting your mom know how much you appreciate and value her, it’s always the thought that counts!
