Happy Daughters’ Day! Ways to Celebrate with Your Family

Daughters’ Day is becoming increasingly celebrated in India and there’s a very good reason why.

Historically, we often used to celebrate our sons more than our daughters here in India, but more modern and fair notions of gender equality are now beginning to gain some ground.

In India, celebrating Daughters’ Day highlights the fact that women hold a valuable place in our society too – after all, every woman was a daughter once! Holding an annual daughter day celebration is great way to show little girls that their presence is very much loved and appreciated.

When is Daughters’ Day? Daughters’ Day in India tends to be celebrated on the fourth Sunday of the month of September, and internationally on 12 January. Like other special days, it’s a time for having fun, treats, and shared activities. Here are some ideas for celebrating Daughters’ Day this year:

  • A Family Day Out. Is there a park or famous monument that your daughter absolutely loves visiting? Or somewhere she’d like to go that she’s never visited before? Why not take her out for a picnic with her favourite eateries nearby, and spend the day seeing the world through her eyes?
  • Boss for a Day. Lots of little girls enjoy dressing up. So how about letting her be Maharani for the day? You could give your daughter 3 royal wishes to fulfill, or give her a new regal costume as a Other costumes and games could celebrate inspirational female icons. What about letting her take charge as Indira Gandhi, unleash her creative side as famous artist Amrita Sher-Gil, or reach the top as Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest?
  • A New Interest. Is there something your daughter has always wanted to try? Is she a budding artist, an aspiring athlete, a science enthusiast? Why not give your daughter something to support a hobby she’s passionate about? This could be a book, a kit, lessons, or just teaching her a skill you know she’d like to learn. Doing these things together is a great way to celebrate the special bond you have with your daughter.
  • A Handmade Card. Why not give your daughter a keepsake she can treasure for years to come? Follow our instructions for making handmade cards here and write a personal message inside, or use one of our ideas below.
